After setting up the two different countries, each claimed sovereignty over the entire peninsula, which led to conflict. The communist government of the north and the anti-communist government of the south clashed, and begin the Korean War.

The North Korean government, the Pyongyang, tried to unify Korea by force, and invaded the South. The attack surprised the South Koreans, and the North Koreans were able to seize the capital, Seoul.

The United States had believed that the Soviet Union supported the attack, and got the UN to support their statement that the aggression towards South Korea must be ended.
