David describes his childhood in all his books, and his journey growing up, in the child called it, David describes younger childhood, he told about how happy and cheerful holidays were and how everyone had smiles, through the years, his father was barely around, and his mother became a heavy drinker, and would come up with an excuse to “punish” David. She would send him to the basement and leave him there, almost close to leaving him to die, starving him for days, and when she would let him eat he would have limited time, she would send him to school with bruises, old clothes, smelling horribly. Until one day he went to school & was late, and had to go to the office, you could tell school staff was use to seeing him like this because in the book, he goes to the office and uses the same excuse he used the week before, the police had been called, and when David told the police all his mother had done, David felt free again. the book ended by David getting sent home to a SAFE home away from his mother, at the very end, he looks back on all he had been through, and how he would never treat his son the same way his mother treated him, this is said because, most children who are abused as a child abuse their own children.
