In 1916, almost 100 years ago, Mr. Deering spent his first winter at Vizcaya. The telephone system at Vizcaya was one of the first set up in Miami-Dade County. It included a rare modern feature— an automatic, electric exchange. That meant Mr. Deering and his guests could dial a number and be directly connected without the assistance of a human telephone operator.
