Symbolism.

The entire song uses symbolism. Father Mckenzie and Eleanor we're never real people that the writer of the song knew. They were characters used to portray realistic lonely people and how they live.

The two symbolic characters live they're entire lives (and die) alone. It is not until Eleanor dies that their paths cross and then it is obviously too late.
