Background Information

-started in the 18th or 19th century

-originally danced in small spaces, so dance moves very contained

-arms are rigid and straight (often said that this is because the British banned dancing and the Irish would shut the bottom of their doors and it looked like they weren't dancing)

-can be danced with a partner or groups of 3-16 people

-soft or hard shoes can be used & costumes have evolved to be very decorative
