Hypothyroidism 

-Under activity of the thyroid

-can happen to newborns if mother does not supply enough thyroid hormone (cretinism)

-stunted growth 

-abnormal bone function 

-low body temperature and sluggishness 

-in older adults usually causes excessive weight gain and fatigue

Hyperthyroidism

-over activity of the thyroid 

-causes elevated metabolic rate

-restlessness 

-overeating 

-enlargement of the thyroid gland (goiter)  

-protruding eyes
