Brief History of Haiti
Haiti was colonized by Spain after Christopher Colombus found it. The French were given the western third of the island in 1697, which later became Haiti. Haiti became one of the richest countries in the Caribbean through the importation of African slaves. In the late 18th century, there was nearly half a million slaves being imported there. Also, after a struggle, Haiti became the first black led nation in the world. They got their independence in 1804. Haiti is now currently the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.
