The US is very competitive and career-focused. People tend to work long hours often out of necessity. Priorities are very different in Scandinavia. Jobs are a way to make money for free time, and there isn't as much "need" to have a prestigious career. No one wants to work more than their 37.5 hours a week. Norway is discussing dropping the work week to 30 hours.
People are more interested in your hobbies than what you do for a job.
