How did the country become unified/independent?

Gained independence from France in 1953 after nearly 100 years


In 1946 the French allowed Cambodians to form political parties and to hold elections for a Consultative Assembly that would advise the monarch on drafting the country's consitution


The Democratic party, espoused immediate independence, democratic reform and parlimentary government


In the Consultative Assembly election held in September 1694, the Democrats won 5@/67 deats

A treaty by the name of Fifty Percent Independence, by Sihanouk was what formally ended the colonial relationship

Cambodians were given most of the control over administrative function
