Biography
John Rutledge was born on September 17, 1739 in Charleston, SC. He studies law at London's Middle Temple in 1760. He married Elizabeth Grimke and had 10 kids with her. In 1761 he was elected the provincial assembly where he started becoming politically active. In 1791 he became Chief Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court. Four years later Washington appointed him to Chief Justice to replace John Jay. He later lost his career the same year his wife died in 1792. He died in 1800 at the age of 60.
