History
Bosnia and Herzegovina, a country the size of West Virginia and twice the population, was originally ruled by the Romans. Later the area was settled by the Slavs and eventually ruled by the Hungarian empire. Around 1200 A. D. Bosnia fought off the kingdoms of Hungary and Serbia for independence. Remaining independent until 1463, when the Turks took over and ruled all the way into the 19th century. In 1878 great strides were made, building railroads, industries, schools, parks and more. The country of Bosnia then became a part of Yugoslavia. In the 1970s, under Tito's communist rule, Bosnia was reinstated as a republic. On April 5, 1992 parliament granted Bosnia's vote for independence. By April 7 of that year the U.S. recognized independence, and by May 22 of the same year, Bosnia was a part of the United Nations. The Serbs, unhappy with this, two days later began a genocide, killing over 100,000 some people. Bombings, separating men and we on, and mass murders were all too common as Bosnia struggled for control. In1995, the United Nations finally took action in pursing and prosecuting the offenders.
