July 17, 1942 — Feb. 2, 1943

The Battle of Stalingrad took place in World War II, during the successful Soviet defense of the city of Stalingrad, now known as Volgograd, in the U.S.S.R. Despite being relatively short (the end of 1942 and early 1943) it was a brutal battle, with combined casualties of over two million, and is considered to be a major turning point in the war. The Germans finally surrendered the battle on February 2, 1943, after months of intense conflict. This stopped the German advance into the Soviet Union and eastern Union, and marked the turning of the tide of war in favor of the Allies.

Stalingrad Stalingrad was located in Southwest Russia on the Volga River, a major industrial and communications center for the Soviet Union in the south. It was named after the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.
