Soon after settlement, many social sub-classes were formed.
The child of a european settler and a native american was called a Mestizo. These people were considered higher class than the purely native population but lower class than the purely european population.
Children who were born in the new world with European Ancestry were called Creollos. These had about the same social status as Mestizos
Those who were part of the aristocracy were pure white Europeans. The working class had mixed races and Creollos. African slaves and natives were the lowest, treated poorly and taken advantage of.
