When William meets his cab driver, Fekadu, he implicitly challenges William to change his ways of profiling others without knowing anything about them. Right when he meets Fekadu, William has to “self-consciously [try] to erase any class differences between them”, and he starts to pick apart the cab driver’s accent and where he must have come from (110). William assumes he knows what Fekadu’s life is like based off of his accent and the color of his skin, however Fekadu’s life and personality cannot be so easily categorized. It quickly becomes clear that Fekadu is not one to shy away from learning about strangers, a quality of his that was more than likely refined during this time as a cab driver. Fekadu almost immediately starts prodding William with questions about where he is headed and about his family, and William is forced to socialize with the man that he is silently judging.
