The 1880s were incredibly important for both the country and the Conners. A review of your families, 1880 and 1900 U.S. Census illustrates the fact that the nation was still absorbing the property it acquired from the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. Note the birth locations of your John and Ida’s children. The 1880 lists them all as “Dakota,” but 1900 has their births broken down into varying states. Thus reflecting the growth and divisions in US history.

The decade marked a particularly tragic time for the Conners family. Touch the large box to the right to read about the sudden death of John Conners months before the birth of your direct ancestor, John Conners (born 1886). The fortitude of spirit and courage Ida must have displayed at this time is a trait that surely left a lasting impression on her children.
