Mauna Kea, Hawaiʻi, a shield volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii.
A Shield Volcano is a type of volcano which is nearly built entirely of lava flows. The mounatin looks a bit like a warriors shield, hense the name SHIELD Volcano. They looks a shield because of there very large size and low profile. This happens because of the mostly fluid lava they erupt, this travels much further than the lava from a more explosive volcano. This makes a steady build up of broad sheets of lava, which results in its distinctive look. Shield volcanoes contain low viscosity,(something which measures the resistane of a fluid) giving it flowing lava.
