What is the world’s largest stencil drawing? Well, you’re looking at it. It is the 22x14m mural created by Victor Ash back in 2007. To this date, it remains as one of the most important and famous works made by the Portuguese artist. As Ash commented himself, his work is more than just a visual expression, it aims to evoke a social discourse on a subject which inspires the artist to create the piece in the first place. Regarding the Astronaut, the artist took inspiration from the Cold War, reflecting the space race between America and the USSR, a fight that went on beyond soldiers and Earth even, that took place in another dimension. As the astronaut floats away to the weightless space, the dripping lines seem to be holding him back, creating an unbreakable link with the Earth, after all…
