The Power in Religion

Artist: Timothy Schmalz

Title: Jesus the Homeless

Date: 2013

Medium : Bronze statue

Provenance: Canada

Source: http://www.npr.org/2014/04/13/302019921/statue-of-a-homeless-jesus-startles-a-wealthy-community

Describe: This sculpture depicts Jesus huddled in a blanket sleeping on a bench as a homeless person. His face and body are obscured by drapery and his only defining feature is the crucification marks on his feet.

Analyze: There is a lack of color here making the statue stand out against any setting. The drapery making it impossible to see Jesus' face make it seem like it could be anybody on the bench. Jesus is huddled into the fetal position displaying a sort of vulnerability. The power in this image comes from the harsh truth staring everyone in the face; Do unto others as you would do unto me. This sculpture with its dark dramatic colors and mysterious drapery let the people know that being homeless or in poverty is very real and that Jesus himself was not the great wealthy king we all remember and usually depict him as.

Interpret: This piece is dark and daring and I think that the lack of color and complexity was used to bring people's attention to the harsh reality of being homeless. The gouge marks on the foot slowly bring people to the realization that every homeless person deserves the same compassion Jesus would've given them.  The mystery and reality of this piece is very striking.

Judge : This piece is simple but effective and I think it really hits home. The message is very easily received and so powerful. It draws attention to the problem without being offensive I think Timothy did a good job.
