driftless region独特的地形是由于它被最后的大陆冰川所绕过，冰川后退留下了泥沙、砾石和岩石沉积。由于没有冰川，河流有时间深入到古老的基岩中，形成陡峭崎岖的独特地貌。整个地区都有喀斯特地貌，其特征是浅层石灰岩基岩、洞穴、深坑、泉水和冷流，是世界上最大的冷水溪流集中区。
