During the 1850s, most Texans still rode horseback or wagons pulled by horses, mules, or oxen. Sandbars, rafts, and debris made steamboat traveling impossible on most rivers except for the Rio Grande. In eastern Texas, where there are larger rivers small boats could get about 100 miles upriver in the spring.
