A Bacteriologist studies bacteriology, which is the study of bacteria. It is a subdivision of microbiology.

Since Bacteriology and Microbiology both deal with microorganisms people see them as the same thing, but they are both a good deal different. The terms were used interchangeably, but bacteriology is a distinct science.
