Indulgences

Indulgences are the remission of sins or evil. They were sold by Catholic priests as a forgiveness of doing evil or committing a sin. It's a get out of jail free card. You can do something wrong, then pay a priest for an indulgence and your time in purgatory is cut down. You are forgiven.

Purgatory is a state of suffering for those who have sinned. A purification, some might say.
