Page 287: The Growth of Towns. In 1850, less than 13,000 people lived in Texas. By 1860 the number went all the way to 26,000. Galveston was the most populated town in Texas. It was also the state's most developed port and trade center. German immigrants made a large part of the population of San Antonio at this time.
