Violent Actions

If African Americans did not show the proper respect that the the whites "deserved", it could lead to trouble for the blacks who could lose their jobs or be lead into violence. For example, lynching was a popular technique to keep blacks "in their place." This often was the case if an African American was seen to have stepped over their second class status or if they were seen to be too prosperous.
