Origin of iodine
Bernard Courtois accidentally discovered Iodine in 1811 when he tried to extract potassium chloride from seaweed. Once he had obtained the potassium chloride crystals from the seaweed he mixed them with sulfuric acid. This created a purple vapor that condensed into bluish-black crystals which later became known as Iodine.
