What were people's view on oil pre-1980 in comparison to the modern day?

Before 1980, people were thinking that oil resources were without limit. At the same time oil was very cheap so people were using and developing oil application without saving limitation. After 1980 oil become a rare and expensive resource and the way industry and people use oil change completely. Now the target is to save oil energy as much as possible.
