The Ukraine Crisis

Why the Suffering?

According to a recent article, the Ukraine crisis started in November of this past year, when President Viktor Yanukovich -the president of the Ukraine who fled his country due to threats by activists protesters who are against the "pro-fascists" government- announced his abandonment of trade partnerships with the European Union, and sought out a closer relationship with their eastern neighbor, Russia. The public, not only in the Ukraine but also in certain parts of Europe, supported an anti-government Ukraine as pictures of massacres of police killing protesters on the street. Then, on December 1st, over 200,000 Ukrainian activists traveled to Kiev Square and protested in front of City Hall, which was seized hours later. When local leaders asked Vladimir Putin for assistance, Russian pledged to protect its citizens in the Eastern Ukraine region. After that announcement, Russian soldiers were deployed into Crimea -peninsula in the Ukraine- and enforced a diluted form of martial law. This became a problem when Russian soldiers eventually killed someone trying to send a warning shot to disperse a group of presumably non-violent protestors. US Secretary of State John Kerry tried to arrange a meeting with both leaders in a peaceful setting, but the leader of the Ukraine did not agree to coming to the meeting. Eventually Russian troops left Crimea, but only after months of suffering.
In my personal opinion, I can see this ending right before mass conflict- wether it be war, or a situation like the Cold War, where no one attacks, but there are always threats to do so. But I can't imagine this happening in the near future, due to all the killing, and distrust going around.
