Cortez Conquers the Aztec

*In 1400 Spanish "explorers" arrived in the Americas. Later called Conquistadors, came for gold and to spread Christianity
*Cortez landed in Mexico in 1519, looking for gold.
*Moctezuma II believed Cortes was a god. He resembled a god who they believed would return some day.
*Moctezuma sent gifts to Cortes, including gold, searching more gold. Cortes marched to Tenochititan. He was greeted as a god but took Moctezuma prisoner
*Moctezuma was killed in a battle between Indian and Spanish forces.
