Questions

Ah Xian uses traditional Chinese materials such a ox bone, bronze, porcelain, jade, Lacquer, concrete and cloisenné.

In his cloisonné lotus figure he uses lotus flowers which are present in dirty swampy water and are symbols for china. He used ox bone for the dragon scales reclining where the ox bone is carved into scales and covers the human body and shows Chinese culture with the dragon scales. In the china bust series of his works he uses porcelain and they identify what the Chinese like, such as fish, deities, animals and teapots. In the concrete forest he explores the idea of urbanisation verse nature where the concrete figure has imprints of leaves in its skin.

Traditional Chinese materials are things like ox bone, cloisonné. Modern materials are materials like concrete, bronze and porcelain because they are widely used.

He shows his cultural Chinese heritage by featuring east and west in the same photos, such as the Lotus figure where he uses a naked western style body, but features lotus flowers that symbolise china. He features emotional parts in his work like the Chinese faces, silent after the tiannemen square incident, and bald where it shows religion with Buddhist monks and plain heads. He shows things that the Chinese like such as their foods and objects.
