2013-2014 has also posed some new and significant challenges in public education. Our school and district have continued to align our curriculum with the Common Core State Standards and implement instructional practices to support the increased rigor associated with these national standards. Professional development and training support continue to be provided to teachers across all grade levels, and new curriculum materials and assessments have been developed to support student learning and success. Beginning in 2014-2015, student learning will be measured by the PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of College and Career Readiness) assessment which is aligned to the Common Core State Standards and replaces the NJASK. The district continues to work to best prepare our students and staff for this new and challenging exam. An additional change this year has been the newly mandated teacher evaluation tool. Based on adopted AchieveNJ legislative, districts were required to adopt a state approved tool for evaluating teacher performance. Our teachers were trained with this tool last year and are being evaluated using it this year. The legislation has significantly increased the amount of time administrators spend in classrooms observing and has already contributed to teacher growth and support in it’s first year of implementation.
Mr. Millaway and I are excited about the new initiatives and challenges in place for this school year and are working collaboratively with staff, students, and parents to successfully support all of the new advances in education in the state, our district, and our school. We look to continue to provide parent information, communication, and training to ensure that the school and home collaboration foster ongoing student learning and achievement.
