Most Texans rode on horseback through the 1850s or in wagons pulled by horses, mules, or oxen. Steam boat almost impossible to travel with natural debris in most Texan rivers. Many towns served stagecoaches that carried a few passengers and mail. The Butterfield line offered service from the Mississippi River valley to the Pacific coast. Texas had 400 miles of rail road. They were laid out in spider web fashion. Started construction in 1850s. Mainly transported mainly products to ports and markets.
