Summary

• Setting: Thornfield
• Mr. Rochester is not around a lot because of business, but one night he asks to see Jane and Adéle after dinner.
• He gives Adéle a box of presents to keep her occupied while he talks to Jane
• Mr. Rochester asks her if she thinks he's handsome and Jane replies "no, sir"
• He admires her honesty and brings up the fact that he treats Jane as inferior to him because he's older. He acknowledges that he should treat her as an equal and asks for her forgiveness
• Mr. Rochester talks about how he had a rough past and that he wants to become a better person, but does not say what his past is, which confuses Jane.
• Adéle comes out wearing a pink dress that was one of Mr. Rochester's presents and he says that she looks like her mother, Céline Varens
• He promises to tell Jane about how he became Adèle's guardian
