The German army were the first to use chorine at the battle of Ypres in 1915. Chlorine gas causes a burning sensation in the throat and cheats pain. Death is painful- you suffocate. The problem with the gas is the weather has to be just right for it to work because if the wind wasn't right the gas could come back and kill them instead of the enemy.
