Bull and Bread

Bull and Bread day is a holiday celebrated in the U.S. Virgin Islands on November 1st. This day is officially known as D. Hamilton Jackson day or Liberty Day. Bull and Bread day is celebrated in St.Croix, St.Thomas, and St.John. People of the U.S. Virgin Islands have a day off from work or school to celebrate Bull and Bread. It's called Bull and Bread Day because at the first rally held by Mr. Jackson they served this food and it continues to be served at the annual celebration. This holiday is celebrated to commemorate what D. Hamilton Jackson did for the labor force in the U.S. Virgin Islands. D. Hamilton Jackson was a civil rights leader and important figure in the struggles for increased civil liberties and workers rights. He petitioned for freedom of the press, was involved in the labor movement, and he also persuaded the U.S. government to to give U.S. Virgin Islanders citizenship.
