The epigraph relates to the chapter because it discusses how the stresses of life can lead to a premature death in bees and humans. In this instance May's overly sympathetic nature adds to her own stresses making her life unbearable. She struggles to find happiness in the midst of all the despair in the world. So just like the bees in spring and summer May's internal conflicts prevent her from leading a long and tranquil life.
