Character Analysis
DESCRIPTION:"Abigail Williams, seventeen, enters—a strikingly beautiful girl, an orphan, with an endless capacity for dissembling. Now she is all worry and apprehension and propriety."(Miller 34)
QUOTE 1: " Now look you. All of you. We danced. And Tituba conjured Ruth Putnam’s dead sisters. And that is all. And mark this. Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you. And you know I can do it; I saw Indians smash my dear parents..."(Miller 41).
Analysis: Abigail acts as a dominating force who employs confident manipulation in her relations with Parrris, John Proctor, and her fellow girls. Her threats toward the other girls show her dominant and threatening personality.
QUOTE 2: " My name is good in the village! I will not have it said my name is soiled! Goody Proctor is a gossiping liar!"(Miller 36).
Analysis: Abigail acts differently around other people to suit her needs to specific situations. Her attitudes toward others are tailor made to benefit her in each interaction. Abigail pretends to be young and innocent towards Parris, yet acts differently towards others. While she may play innocent and young to save herself from trouble she attempts to convince John Proctor she is a grown woman. Abigail consistently changes to get the most personal benefit out of each of her interactions in the village.
