The Experiment Used to Define the Theory
Ernest and his associates bombarded a thin piece of gold foil with fast-moving alpha particles, which had a positive charge with about four times the mass of a hydrogen atom. The scientist were shocked to find out that about 1 in 8000 of the alpha particles had actually been deflected back toward the source. This is how Ernest came up with his discovery of the atomic nucleus.
