NATO

The spread of Communism forced the United States and 11 other countries to form the North Atlantic Treaty Organization(NATO) in 1949, while the Soviet Union and its Communist allies formed the Warsaw Pact in 1955. The Warsaw Pact and NATO politically divided the European continent. This was one of the many things that fueled the Cold War.
