Smilodon were most famous for their long canines of 11 inches. They were fragile and could not have bitten into bone. The cats did not use their long teeth while taking down prey. Only when their prey was totally subdued did they use their teeth to slash the throat. I find this most interesting because those are some big teeth and I would have thought that the Saber-tooth tiger would have used them to take down pray.
