Consumerism in the 1920's

Around the time when TGG is set, the economic boom had just taken place. Gatsby is a prime example of someone in this time; he had come into new money, purely because of his entrepreneurial skills. However, it is clear that something is going to go wrong, and it did - the Wall Street crash. Fitzgerald foreshadows this in The Great Gatsby.
