Project: Kansai International Airport, Osaka, Japan
Kansai International Airport (KIX) is located on an artificial island in the middle of Osaka Bay. The airport was built considering how many earthquakes, tsunamis and tornadoes hit Japan every year. The sturdiness was shown in 1995,when Japan was hit by the Kobe earthquake, which was only 20 km away from KIX and killed 6,434 people on Japan's main island of Honshū. Due to its earthquake engineering, the airport emerged unharmed, due to the use of sliding joints.Even the glass in the windows remained intact.
