-they transport oxygen to tissues and transport carbon dioxide to the lungs to be breathed out.

Description of red blood cell

-usually 6-8 micrometers in diameter
-it is a biconcave disc like a shallow bowl
-when it matures it loses it's nucleus
-its flexible so it can travel through the capillaries
-one third of its matter is hemoglobin
