A traditional colombian form of music is called Cumbia. which basically means percussion and wind. the instruments used are as follows: - PERCUSSION- bass drum (tambora) which is a deep bass. merry drum (tambor alegre) back up rhythm . calling drum (lamador) is a back beat. maracas and metal guaches are used for overtone. WIND instruments are- gaita macho, rhythmic and harmonic support for the female flute player. gaita hembra which caiies the meledy.
The origin of cumbia music comes from the days of slavery in the late 17th century and is derived from the African word cumbe which means dance. Another word was derived later in the Antioquia region of Colombia called caracumbe and was coined by African slaves who worked in the mines. A third variation of the word called paracumbé emerged and then disappeared as well as the term cumbancha which in Cuba means party. The music comes from- African, native Indigenous, and European, modern American, Caribbean, Cuban, and Jamaican.
