Using the General Formula of a Homologous Series to Predict the Formula of Any Member of the Series.

The general formula of alkanes is CnH2n+2
and using this you can work out the formula for any member of the series.

For example: to work out the formula for an alkane with 8 carbons you would do;

C8 H(2x8) + 2, so the answer would be C8H18.
