During the 1850's Texans mainly rode horses or in wagons carried by oxen or mule.
During the war with Mexico, Texans used the Rio Grande as transportation for steamships when rainfall allowed.
Many towns used stagecoaches, which carried mail, freight, and passengers.
Little progress had been made with education since President Lamar set land aside for schools. In 1854 a law was signed that set aside $2 million for Texas public schools, however few public schools were created at this time. Today, the fund is worth over $20 Billion.
Amusement included horse racing, hunting, fishing, and dancing. Some towns had theaters where you could see a play or entertainment.
Towns grow to cities
