He put his own twists on his poems by combining two common words into a new synthesis. He also twisted rules around to suit his own purposes using words like "if," "am," and "because" as nouns or having private meanings assigned to words.

about

Despite his poems non-traditional form they still became very popular with many readers.

He had liberal, overly generous parents who from early on encouraged him to develop his creative gifts.
His father, Edward Cummings, was a Unitarian minister of the South Congregational Church in Boston, and his mother Rebecca Haswell, encouraged him to write one poem a day.
He went to school at the Cambridge Latin School and at Harvard College. In 1924 Cummings married Elaine Orr, the former wife of his mentor. they had one child, Nancy, born while Elaine was still married to his mentor. Elaine divorced Cummings within the year, to marry an Irish banker and politician, taking Nancy with her to Ireland and blocking Cummings from being able to see his child. His second marriage, to Anne Barton in 1929, also ended in divorce, in 1932. These disasters affected his personality so much that by the 1930s he had changed from a vivacious, energetic man to a mean, hard-hitting critic of American culture. Cummings was imprisoned for several months by French authorities for suspicion of treason due to letters he'd written during world war 1.
