SERFS & PEASANTS

Serfs and peasants were considered the lowest class of the feudal system. 90% of the population during that time were either serfs, peasants,or guilds.
Serfs were peasants bound to the land. They were not slaves but they were still not free; they had to ask permission to leave the manor. Since the serfs were tied to the land they would not leave a certain place. For instance if their master left and a new master came they were not to go with their old master, but instead began to serve the new owner of the land.

Peasants differed from serfs because they did not stay with the land, they kept with their masters. They worked in the manor, repaired the property and the roads. They too were not complete free, for example they had to ask permission to marry. They also had to pay, using objects that they owned, to get grain from the mill from their masters.
