Guilds
An association of merchants or artisans.
Guilds cooperated to protect their economic interests. They helped build up the economic organization of Europe. Merchant guilds appeared first. They dominated town life by passing laws and levying taxes. Eventually, artisans organized craft guilds. Each guild represented an occupation such as weavers, bakers, or goldsmiths. Only guild members were allowed to work in trade. They made rules to protect their goods, regulate work, and set prices.
