Peasants & Serfs

Peasant: A poor farmer or farm worker who has a low social status and is uneducated. Life was harsh for most peasants. They had a simple diet consisting of only black bread with vegetables. At night, a peasant family would sleep with their livestock in a hut.

Serf: Most peasants on a manor were serfs, bound to the land. They were not slaves, but they were not free. They couldn't leave the manor without the lord's permission and if the manor was granted to a new lord, the serfs went with it.
