Agriculture

Why was the monsoon season so important to farmers in the Indian River Basin?

The monsoon provide rain for the agricultural society during the spring and summer. During the dry months, irrigation was used. When the monsoon doesn't provide enough rain, for crops and irrigation, it will result in droughts, reduced harvests, and widespread famine.

Describe the irrigation systems that were used in the basin.

Why was India's population able to grow throughout the postclassical era?

Irrigation systems were helped out by rivers, but as the population rose, the irrigation systems became crucial in order to produce enough food. Complex waterworks like dams, reservoirs, canals, wells, and tunnels were built. Giant reservoirs captured the monsoon rains and canals would carry the water out to the fields.

The population growth was mainly due to the increased agricultural productivity.
